Courses
Executive Functions
The purpose of this class is to help you redevelop the thinking skills (executive functions) that you need to live a goal-directed and purposeful life. Brain injury can affect your ability to set goals, motivate yourself to start and finish tasks, plan ahead and anticipate the consequences of actions, plan and organize day-to-day life, and monitor and adapt your behaviour in order to fit different situations. If you have experienced difficulties with any of these abilities since your brain injury, this is the class for you. Through this workshop, you will develop your awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses and learn strategies to help you adapt and succeed in daily life.
Effective Communication and Social Skills
Communication and social skills affect many areas of your life such as your ability to make and keep friends, maintain employment or volunteer positions, have healthy family relationships, and feel socially accepted. You may have experienced difficulties in your ability to communicate since your brain injury or this may have been an issue you have faced your entire life.
The purpose of this class is to train you to be a good communicator, so that you can feel comfortable in social situations and become a person that others enjoy being around. This course will teach you the skills and strategies you need to listen well and communicate clearly with others. We will also look at more advanced topics such as how to read body language and how to look at situations from another person’s perspective. You will find that as your communication and social skills improve, people will respond to you differently and you will experience deeper and more meaningful relationships with others.
Self-Esteem
Do you feel as though past failures, set-backs and life-events have taken a toll on your sense of self worth? Low self-esteem can limit your life in many ways, such as making you less likely to meet and open yourself up to others or stop you from achieving goals and making progress in your rehabilitation process. This course uses proven cognitive techniques to help you learn how to control the self-critical inner voice and build up a healthy sense of self worth. You will leave this eight-week course with useful skills that can easily be applied to your day-to-day life and strategies to use when you face situations in which your sense of self worth is challenged.
